Data-only plan: what it means for a travel eSIM

Mobile data with no phone number, calls or SMS.

Most travel eSIMs give you data and nothing else. You can still use messaging and calling apps over the internet, but the eSIM has no number of its own, so it cannot receive an SMS sent to a foreign number.

Your home SIM can stay in the phone and keep its number, so bank codes sent by SMS still arrive on the home line.

What to check

  • Keep the home SIM active if you expect SMS codes
  • Choose a plan with a number only if you need local calls or a local booking code
